RISE TO POWER Version History
-----------------------------
Version 1.00 - First public release. Lasted a week!
Version 1.10 - Fixed several major bugs. Random numbers are now
truly random, you can't marry twice, killed
hostages are properly updated, and many minor
bugs are also fixed. Despite my best efforts bugs
still were in the end product (Ver 1.00).
Version 1.20 - Fixed a few reported cosmetic problems and added
a couple of twists to make life more interesting
for players. Also fixed a bug in the fighting to
the death routine. Players were continuing to hang
around after they were killed. This has been fixed.
The fighting to the death option has also been
clarified and modified so you understand better what
has happened. You can ALSO be killed even though
you win! I have substantially revised the
documentation and text files to make them more
informative and useful. Added siege engines to the
game also. Very, very limited release on this
version.
Version 1.30 - Added death of children due to plague as an event.
Replaced most time delays with pauses. The delays
were too short and were not allowing players to see
the messages. Cured a bug which allowed players once
they were in the Attack Keep menu to keep attacking
forever. Added more messages to allow players who
logged on to see what had happened to them without
having to go to browse the news. Added UPGRADE.DOC
and a separate HISTORY.DOC file to the package so
sysops who already have the game can get essential
information immediately instead of browsing through
the SYSOP.DOC files. Cleaned up a few misspellings
and cosmetic glitches.
Version 1.40 - Added four new events of a positive nature. Added
a Ransom Hostage option to the Visiting players
menu. You can buy em back now but it's gonna cost
you 25% of your land, gold and wheat! Fixed a bug
in the Hostage Rescue routine which did not allow
the wife to be rescued. Added an Erect Church
option to the Barons Menu which allows you a way
to raise reputation by 2, if you can afford the
price tag! Modified sysop documentation to
discuss port locking and how to reflect it in
the dropfile. Changed the RTP.CTL format to
include LOCKED BAUD and a few other things.
Version 1.50 - Thanks to an enhanced doordriver add-on from
Steven Lorenz the game no longer requires a
fossil, now supports nonstandard interrupts, is
now RIP aware (but still not a RIP game at
this time), now supports up to 115,200 baud,
now supports comports 0-15 and now supports
PC Board 15. To implement these new features
you will have to replace your old RTP.CTL file
with the new one and modify it to fit your
setup. Made a major change to the Assassin
Option. You can no longer hire assassins which
are kept on hand. Now you hire one for a single
mission whose cost varies according to the mission
you want performed and he performs it that
instant. Should make this option much more fun.
Fixed a bug in the maintenance program which was
not placing Brigands on the map correctly and
in the right quantities. Changed the rewards
system to be more realistic based on what you
did and how you did it. Corrected a few spelling
errors and other cosmetic glitches while I was
as it too.
Version 1.60 - Corrected minor problem with the fighting brigand
routine which did not pay the player the reward
for killing them. Implemented a recommendation
that a player only be allowed to perform the
quest once per day. Also changed the output
messages to explain to the player he was only
wounded and NOT killed in the quest performance
section. Fixed a small bug which kept allowing
0 deployed men to remain on map after a battle
and did not allow a increase in skills after
fighting another players deployed troops.
Version 1.70 - With the more generous rewards came the problem
that the first player on each day would hunt down
all the brigands and get all the reward to the
detriment of the other players who followed. As
an Army marches on it's stomach so to speak I have
added a routine which will make the above strategy
costly. Now when you march with troops they eat
more grain and will desert if not fed. This
actually makes the game much more realistic as
armies of that period were constrained on what
they could do due to constant lack of supplies.
The player instruction file has been upgraded
to explain this to the players. The reward for
brigands has been lowered to GF 30 each. The
old level of GF 50 was just to high.
Version 1.80 - Corrected minor bug which posted Child #1's name
to the news when you named your second child.
Changed the formula so that players traveling alone
are not quite so invincible as they were.
Changed it so that no extra wheat is deducted if
you are traveling with 30 or less troops.
Added a quit command to the coordinate input routine
for the Attack Players keep option.
Changed the Destroy Fief option to "Lay Siege" to
reflect better what is really happening.
***Peasants now have children.
Changed the harvest formula to give more realistic
results. Now the land has a carrying capacity and
you can have bad, average, good or great growing
seasons.
Wheat consumption is much greater then before to
reflect the barter economy of that time. The
higher on the pecking order you are the more wheat
you get in compensation.
Changed the economic model to be tougher and more
like what you would expect in the 15th Century.
Required land donation to the Church to raise your
reputation 1 point has been decreased to 500 acres.
Cost to erect a church has been increased to 1000
bushels of wheat in addition to the other normal
requirements.
Eliminated that annoying prompt that asked you
how many men-at-arms you wanted to travel with
even if you did not have any.
Added a brigand restocking routine to the game in
addition to the one in the MAINT.EXE file. Now
brigands will be restocked before each player
begins playing the game instead of just once
daily. The first player each day made a habit
of wiping the brigands out to the detriment of
other players. This will now give other players
a crack at the brigands as well.
Fixed a bug which was allowing brigands to be
placed on Keeps in addition to empty sectors.
Version 1.81 - Maintenance release that fixed a bug which
stated you successfully bribed or retreated from
brigands and then killed you anyway. Who say's
computers can't lie?
Version 1.82 - Maintenance release fixing the following bugs
accidentally introduced into the program with
the version 1.80 major upgrade and implemented
a few recommendations received from some users:
1. When a player died, committed suicide or was
killed any deployed troops he had remained on
the map even though he was removed. Fixed.
2. Once in awhile negative numbers were posted
to the stats screen. Fixed.
3. Scoreboard was not being updated to remove
players when they died at the end of the game.
Fixed.
4. Allowed more space for the larger numbers
involved with wheat and money due to the
economic changes.
5. The name of the keep was not changed when
your heir took over. Fixed.
6. When a player died and his heir took over
he could not get back in the keep if he had
locked it. Fixed.
7. When a player died and had an heir the
program did not put him back in the home menu
of the keep and did not refresh the screen.
Fixed.
Version 1.83 - Maintenance Release to fix a few bugs which were
found and implement a few suggested changes:
1. Modified the harvest formula to take into
account the peasant to land working ratio. More
land does not now mean automatically larger
harvests. You have to have enough workers
too.
2. Added a routine to the Maint.exe program
which automatically deletes all the old brigands
from the map each day and then recalculates the
correct quantities to put back on the map
and places them randomly. This corrects the
problem of too many brigands when several players
dies off or are removed from the game. It also
ensures brigands are moving around.
3. Changed the brigand restocking routine to limit
the brigands to a maximum of 100 in anyone location
on the map and 1000 overall.
4. Fixed the hostage routine so that players who
are holding hostages and are killed, free those
hostages and return them to the owning player.
5. The scoring routine had a small bug in it
which did not report the province count correctly.
Fixed.
6. Increased the levels of starting wheat in the
RTPINIT and RTPEDIT programs to reflect the larger
quantities now available.
7. The ranking system did not correctly show when
you became Baron or King. Fixed.
8. Revised the STAT.ANS screen to allow for longer
player names.
9. Revised the player instruction file to reflect
recent changes.
10. Moved the routine for eliminating players who
have not played for more then 10 days to the
main program. This fixed a bug whereby players
who were eliminated did not give up their titles
or hostages. They do now.
Version 1.90 - ALMOST A COMPLETE RE-WRITE OF THE GAME!
Version 1.90A Major Improvements have been added to the game:
(NOTE: A reset of the game will be required!)
1. Thanks to the invaluable contributions of ANSI
artist Violet Stymacks there is much more ansi art
to illustrate key segments of the game.
2. The "5" key on the number pad replaces the "R"
key when performing recon on the main or mini-map.
Now when you Hit the "5" key you will perform a
recon of the selected space next to you.
3. Enhanced the recon command to give the same
movement options as you now have in moving around.
4. The mini-map is now larger. You can see 2
spaces in each direction now.
5. Added a new opening screen.
6. Added some new settings to the RTPEDIT program
which will now allow you to control the number
of brigands per man-at-arms, number of brigands per
space on map and the max quantity of brigands
allowed on the entire map at anyone time.
7. Fixed a small bug in the fighting brigands/
deployed soldiers routine which kept you from
eliminating just 1 brigand/deployed soldier on
occassion.
8. The recon function will now sometimes give the
player a false sense of security by saying that a
space is empty when it is not this way they can't
always duck everything on the map.
9. Fixed a bug that was not updating deployed
soldiers so they would recognize when an heir took
over from his father.
10. Revised the player instruction file to explain
the new items and clarify a few old options.
11. If you fight to the death OR destroy a enemy
player and his troops away from his Keep you will
now get all his remaining gold and wheat even if he
has an heir.
12. Changed the routines to make sure that players
always have at least 100 acres of land and at
least 5 peasants so that they always have a small
amount of gold and wheat coming in to them.
13. Raiding is now more profitable then before.
14. When you duel a human player you can lose some
land if you are defeated or gain some land if you
win now.
15. Cleaned up a few obscure errors which cropped
up in rare and unusual situations I had not
anticipated.
16. Because of their length I have now added a
ZIP compressed copy of the instructions to the
game package so that it can be placed in your
on your BBS for download by interested players.
17. Apparently it was possible to duel your self
after becoming King. Fixed. Thanks to Jay
Mottern for the bug report.
18. Ranks were not being updated when the heir
took over. Fixed. Thanks to Jay Mottern for the
bug report.
19. When you are out of wheat virtually everyone
leaves at once. I modified this so the people
leave or die more slower now so it gives you more
of a chance to recover.
20. Fixed a bug that caused players to be moved
to the far end of the map after making a
successful assassination and leving the Kings
Keep menu for the main map.
21. Changed it so that when a player dies his
heir loses all titles ABOVE the level of count and
the Computer King and Computer Barons you deposed
resume their old positions/titles.
22. Version 1.90A is a last minute addtion of some
code. A few copies of 1.90 got out before I was
able to catch them so 1.90A is fix show the
difference of versions.
Version 1.91 Major Improvements have been added to the game:
1. A new custom ANSI art opening screen courtesy of
that superb ANSI artist Michael Arnett has been
added.
2. A modification has been made to the door driver
portion of the program to correct a bug which
was locking up OS/2 systems.
3. On game start-up 25 brigands are now added to
the map regardless if there is a player present
or not. Thanks to Bob Lucas for this change
based on his recommendation/bug report.
4. Fixed a bug which was allowing people to sell
wheat they did not have. Several reported
this problem. Should have seen this one myself
(blush.......)
5. Added a routine which kills off relatives being
held hostage when the player they belong to dies.
6. Added a "wheat" status line to the main map
display and deleted the old "your troops are
consuming more wheat" message which many found
aggrevating. Also the wheat status line turns
red when the level drops to 100 bushels or
below. Thanks go to Jay Mottern for a bug
report and list of recommendations.
7. Reduced the reward for brigands to GF25 per
head taken to balance the game better.
8. Changed the combat formula to make battles more
shorter and a little more realistic. Thanks go
to Jay Mottern for this change.
9. Brigands are more likely now to take a bribe
then fight, if given the chance. Several players
wanted a kinder and gentler set of brigands
to have to deal with at the beginning. This is
the best I can do to help out without affecting
play balance too much...
10. There is now a 50% chance of successfully
retreating. It was only 40% before. Changed for
same reason shown in #9 above.
11. Almost all messages are private now. This should
reduce the confusion over what is happening and
to whom.
12. The requirements to become count have been
changed to 400 men and 1000 acres of land
for better game play.
13. Deductions of wheat for marching troops only
affects troops OVER 30 instead of all of
them as before. See text instruction file
for further information.
14. Revised the main menu to add 1 new selection
and changed another. The news file was getting
too big so now 2 news files are maintained.
The current days new is kept in one file
and yesterdays news is kept in another.
The maint.exe handles the transfer and
renaming of the files on a daily basis. It
VERY important that you only run your maint
ONCE daily and preferably after midnight.
Thanks to Steve Smith for a bug report which
forced this change.
15. Changed the formula to make missions a little
more easier to perform. For many, especially
early on they were just too tough.
16. Fixed a bug in the player-to-player fighting
routine on the map which kept casualties from
updating the other players data file. Thanks
go to Joel Downer for his bug report on this.
17. The text instruction file has been updated to
reflect these changes.
18. The main program and maintenance program now
create an error log file if an error occurs.
Many people requested this addition.
19. Please not that as of June 1st 1994 my FIDO
number will be changing to 1:391/3010.
Version 1.92 - Maintenance Release which fixed the following bugs:
1. Fixed the infamous runtime error 105 problem
(Finally!) introduced in version 1.91 by mistake.
2. Fixed the runtime error 100 problem which
was also introduced by accident in version 1.91.
3. Fixed a problem with negative numbers being
shown in the attributes on rare occasions.
4. Corrected some misspellings.
5. Added a "Sample.CTL" file to the package to
show what it should look like when you are done
editing it.
Version 1.93 - Added some new support to the game:
1. The game will now function on a multi-node system
but still cannot be played by more than one player
at a time. If a second node attempts to play the
game at the same time the system will now show them
the LOCKED.ANS screen and after a delay return them
back to the BBS.
2. DESQView is now supported.
3. Automatic Windows, WindowsNT, OS/2,DOS 5.0+ time
slice releasing is provided to support Multi-tasking.
4. Now supports Com Ports 1-4.
5. Now provides extended support for fossils.
6. Additional BBS dropfile formats are now
supported.
7. A new RTP.CTL is included to implement the
above features.
8. A new catalog of our products has been added.
9. A new B4UASK.DOC checklist is provided to help
operational problems.
10. A new registration form is provided which now
gives discounts on purchase of our games OR a
discount on future buys if you have previously
purchased games from me.
11. Found and eliminated the bug which was causing
a delay before the opening screen was displayed. Will
now seem to be much faster on startup.
12. Edited the RTPOPEN.ANS Screen to delete 1 line.
It should have been 22 lines and not 23.
13. Made a few small changes in the RTPINIT.EXE,
RTPEDIT.EXE and MAINT.EXE files to correct a minor
data reading glitch.
14. Got word that the infamous "READ PAST EOF" error
surfaced again (Arghhhh!). I have made a correction
which should hopefully - and finally - kill this one
off!
Version 1.94 - Improvements and bug fixes:
1. At the request of several BBS sysops I have
adjusted the code so that Share is not required
to run the game on SINGLE NODE systems (only).
2. Fixed a bug in the game which did not save
player information when a human King was replaced
by another Human after a duel.
(Reported by Michael Cox)
3. Fixed a bug in the Trade menu for Human players
which was not saving trade information and allowing
players to get rich because of the bug.
4. Some players were clever enough to discover that
under certain conditions Player Information was not
saved if carrier was dropped. This bug has now been
fixed. No matter what happens now a players game
information will now be saved. Nice try guys!
5. An error which was giving an incorrect reward
for killing brigands when the player was the one
to kill off the last of them is fixed.
6. Finally located and fixed the problems which
were messing up the writing of the news items to
the news.dat file. The news should look correct
now.
Version 1.95 - Minor maintenance and update.
